My Favorite Free Software (2024)

Below is a list of the programs I believe every computer user should check out in 2024.

  1. LibreOffice – “LibreOffice is a free and powerful office suite, and a successor to OpenOffice.org” LibreOffice comes with a great set of software. It comes with a word presser called Writer, a spreadsheet called Calc, a presentation called Impress, a database called Base, a Visio like drawing program called Draw, and math editor called Math. This is a great office suite.
  2. Thunderbirtd – A free email desktop program
  3. Gimp – “GIMP is a cross-platform image editor available for GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows and more operating systems. It is free software, you can change its source code and distribute your changes.” This is a great alternative to Adobe’s expensive Photoshop.
  4. Video LAN Client aka VLC – “VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.”
  5. Rufus – Rufus is a great easy to use program to help you make boot-able USB drives.
  6. KeePass – Keepass is a great password manager that keeps all of your passwords locally. If you want to share them between PC just put the data file in your online storage folder like Dropbox or Onedrive.
  7. Dropbox – A nice online easy to use online services that gives you 5gbs of storage for free.
  8. 7zip – “A great program to compress and decompress files 7zip supports a wide range of compressed file formats.”
  9. Linux Mint – Linux Mint is an alternative to Windows and MAC OS. It is designed to work ‘out of the box’ and comes fully equipped with the apps most people need.
  10. Aomi Backupper Standard – “Free Backup Software for Windows PCs to Protect Your Operating System and Data” This is one program you might want consider buying.
  11. OBS – “OBS Studio is a free and open-source app for screen casting and live streaming. OBS Studio provides real-time capture, scene composition, recording, encoding, and broadcasting via the Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP). It can stream videos to any RAMP-supporting destination, including YouTube, Twitch, Instagram and Facebook”
  12. Openshell – A free program that gives you the old style Start Menu back.
  13. Inkscape –  is a great Vector Graphics program.
