The steps below are things you should do to keep your PC running in tip top shape.
- Backup your data. This is just a reminder, since you should be doing this all of the time. You can of course just copy your data to another drive. I would recommend that you make more than one backup copy. Using services like OneDrive will help you backup your data automatically online.
- Go through your data files and delete the files you do not need. Make sure you back them up first
- Disk Cleanup. When you run Disk Cleanup make sure to select “Clean up system files. This will delete any old Windows update files.
- Clean your browser cache. An article from PC Magazine tell you how to clear the browser cache for most web browsers How to Clear Your Cache on Any Browser.
- Uninstall any software you no longer use. If you are not sure if you need the software, then use the internet to find out more about it.
- Make sure all of the software you use is up to date. This includes Windows security / driver updates, and any other software you use.
- Scan for Malware. For this use your choice of Antivirus, the MRT utilities. Fror fastest scan results perform steps 3 – 5 first..
- Run SFC/scannow to check for error with your operating files. This has to be done in an elevated CMD.
- Optimizer your drives by using built in Windows defragmenter.
- If your PC is running slow then you might want to perform a reinstall of Windows. This can be done by doing the steps in Microsoft’s article How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC. Over time I believe this should be done, because over time Windows gets messed up. Remember to back up your data first.
