Realistic Hacker Thrillers

1. WarGames (1983) – Realistic hacking thriller: A teen computer whiz (Matthew Broderick) accidentally hacks into a U.S. military supercomputer running nuclear-war simulations, nearly triggering World War III​en.wikipedia.org. This Cold War-era film popularized hacking concepts and remains a classic tech thriller.
2. WarGames: The Dead Code – a 2008 American direct-to-video thriller film written by Randall Badat and Rob Kerchner and directed by Stuart Gillard. It is the sequel to the 1983 film WarGames. Production began on November 20, 2006, in Montreal, and the film was released on DVD on July 29, 2008, by MGM‘s home video distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. According to MGM’s original press release, the film is budgeted as one in a series of direct-to-DVD sequels.[1]
3. Sneakers (1992) – Realistic caper thriller: Robert Redford leads a team of security specialists (ex-hackers) who are hired to retrieve a powerful “black box” device, only to find themselves in the middle of a complex espionage plot​en.wikipedia.org. Their high-tech heist and witty teamwork have made it a favorite among hacker-film fans.
4. The Net (1995) – Cyber-thriller: Sandra Bullock plays a reclusive systems analyst whose identity is maliciously erased by a criminal conspiracy. 5. Antitrust (2001) – portrays young idealistic programmers and a large corporation (NURV) that offers a significant salary, an informal working environment, and creative opportunities for those talented individuals willing to work for them. The charismatic CEO of NURV (Tim Robbins) seems to be good-natured, but new employee and protagonist Milo Hoffman (Ryan Phillippe) begins to unravel the terrible hidden truth of NURV’s operation.

Cybercrime & Action Thrillers

1. Live Free or Die Hard (2007) – Action-thriller: Bruce Willis returns as John McClane, teaming up with a young hacker (Justin Long) to stop cyber-terrorist Thomas Gabriel. Gabriel’s hack infiltrates government and financial systems in a three-stage “fire sale” cyberattack intended to collapse U.S. infrastructure​en.wikipedia.org. The film blends high-octane action with a hacker plot and shows McClane adapting to modern cyber threats.
2. Blackhat (2015) – Cybercrime thriller: Chris Hemsworth stars as Nick Hathaway, a jailed computer hacker who is granted early release to help international authorities stop a cybercrime network. He must race to track down the mastermind behind attacks on a nuclear plant and a stock exchange. 3. Swordfish (2001) – Action thriller: John Travolta plays a mysterious agent who forces ex-con hacker Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) to program a potent computer worm. 4. Who Am I (2014) – Cyber-thriller (German): This German film follows Benjamin Engel, a young computer whiz who joins CLAY (Clowns Laughing At You), a Berlin hacker collective. Cyberpunk & Sci‑Fi Hacker Fiction

1. The Matrix (1999) – Cyberpunk action: Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a computer hacker recruited by rebel leader Morpheus to free humanity from the Matrix, a simulated reality controlled by sentient machines. In this groundbreaking sci-fi action film, hacking is used metaphorically (hacking the mind/matrix), but the hacker heroes’ fight against a computer-ruled world is a central theme​en.wikipedia.org. The Matrix is one of the most famous cyberpunk films of all time.
2. Ghost in the Shell (1995) – Cyberpunk anime: In a futuristic Japan, Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg policewoman hunting a cybercriminal known as the “Puppet Master”. 3. Tron (1982) – Cyberpunk sci-fi: Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is a video-game programmer who is digitized and sucked into his company’s mainframe computer. Inside this digital world, he must combat a rogue security program and its army of virtual opponents to escape. Tron takes the classic hacker-versus-corporation story to a literal virtual world: Flynn attempts to hack the system from within the computer itself​cobalt.io. 4. Hackers (1995) – Cult hacker thriller: A stylized ’90s cult classic about a group of high-school hackers (Angelina Jolie, Jonny Lee Miller, etc.) who stumble onto a corporate extortion scheme. Documentaries & True Stories

1. Citizenfour (2014) – Documentary/True Story: Academy Award–winning documentary by Laura Poitras about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. It captures Snowden’s own account as he leaked classified documents in 2013, revealing the scale of U.S. government mass-surveillance programs. The film follows Snowden contacting journalists and exposing the NSA’s practices​cobalt.io. Though not a “hacker movie” in the fiction sense, it’s a real-life tale highly relevant to cyber and privacy issues.
2. The Great Hack (2019) – Documentary/Real Story: A Netflix documentary about the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal.
